Comparing the Long-Term Performance of Spray-Applied Fireproofing vs. Intumescent Coatings

Totally agree on the inspection part. I’ve seen too many projects where the fireproofing was just applied and then forgotten. It’s like, what’s the point if you’re not going to maintain it? Especially with SFRM, you can get delamination or moisture issues if you’re not careful. Regular checks can save a lot of headaches down the line.

Yeah, maintenance is key. But let’s not forget about the importance of proper application in the first place. I’ve worked on sites where the SFRM was applied too thin or unevenly, and it’s a nightmare to fix later. Same goes for intumescent coatings - if you don’t get the thickness right, you’re compromising the fire resistance. It’s all about getting it right from the start.

Speaking of application, has anyone tried using drones for inspecting hard-to-reach areas? I’ve heard some companies are starting to use them for checking the condition of fireproofing on high structures. Could be a game-changer for ensuring everything’s up to standard without putting inspectors at risk.

Drones sound cool, but I’m more concerned about the environmental impact of these materials. Especially with intumescent coatings, some of the chemicals used are pretty harsh. I wonder if there’s been any progress in developing more eco-friendly options that still meet the fire resistance standards. Anyone come across anything like that?
